11 Movies Like Day Shift: It’s Time to Kick Some Evil A$$

I LOVE a good horror comedy, and Day Shift starring Jamie Foxx fits the bill perfectly. This vampire hunting gem is full of laughs, the occasional jump-scare, and over-the-top action. It’s the perfect blood sucking flick to add to your Halloween roster.

While traditional horror is seemingly what most Halloween enthusiasts are interested in this time of year, I find that a good horror comedy is the perfect movie to watch by yourself. You can have a slashing good time, without scaring yourself out of sleep.

Best movies like Day Shift

1. Zombieland (2009)

Zombieland is an action thriller that completely fits the horror comedy genre to a tee. Four misfits find each other after the zombie apocalypse and decide to team up and kick some undead ass in this popular movie.

If you don’t mind gore and are looking for a lighthearted version of The Walking Dead, I highly recommend adding this flick to your list. It’s a hilarious take on the scary movie genre that will have you laughing out loud.

2. Army of Darkness (1992)

What would the horror comedy genre be without Army of Darkness? In this time traveling flick, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) is transported back to medieval Europe where he has to battle an army of the dead.

This flicks is filled with laughs, gore, and over-the-top action sequences that will leave you entertained from beginning to end. If you’re a fan of the Evil Dead franchise, then you’ll definitely want to check this one out.

2. Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice is my ultimate horror comedy flick, I watch it every Halloween. It’s the story of a recently deceased couple who haunt their old home in an attempt to scare away the new owners. When that doesn’t work, they call upon Beetlejuice, a freelance “bio-exorcist” to help them.

This movie is completely mad, but in the best way possible. It’s filled with dark humor, Tim Burton’s signature weirdness, and some truly iconic scenes. If you’re looking for a movie that’s a bit out there, then Beetlejuice is the perfect flick for you.

3. Warm Bodies (2013)

I’ll admit that Warm Bodies is a bit more of a comedic romance than a horror film. But I’m still putting it on my movies like Day Shift list because it deals with horror monsters.

It takes place during an Zombie apocalypse, so I’m going to count it. This flick is the story of a Zombie who falls in love with a human girl, and begins to question everything he knows about the world.

It’s by-far the most warm-hearted flick on this list, but it’s still a lot of fun. If you’re looking for a movie that’s a bit lighter on the gore but still includes a heavy amount of zombies, then I recommend checking out.

4. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

From Dusk Till Dawn mixes Quentin Tarantino (screenplay by) with unintended vampire killers. Unsurprisingly, it’s the recipe for an instant cult classic. The story follows two criminals who take a family hostage and end up holing up in a vampire-infested strip club.

This movie is over-the-top, gory, and completely insane (which should surprise no one). It’s a good blend of horror and comedy, and if you’re a fan of Quentin Tarantino, I’d recommend adding it to your horror movie list.

5. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

If you’re looking for a comedic horror flick, Shaun of the Dead is a popular movie you’ll want to consider. It’s the story of an underachieving man who is trying to save his girlfriend and mother during a zombie apocalypse.

Along the way, he has to deal with his slacker best friend, and figure out how to survive in this new world. It’s a hilarious movie that does a great job of making light of a serious situation. If you want a laugh, definitely check it out.

6. The Babysitter (2017)

If you want an even mix of gore, horror and comedy, then The Babysitter is for you. This Netflix film is the story of a young boy who discovers that his favorite babysitter is part of a Satanic cult. It’s a fun movie that does fantastic work of mixing my favorite film genres.

The Babysitter is a great watch if you’re looking for something that’s a bit more lighthearted than some of the other films on this list. But you don’t have to sacrifice on the blood, guts and gore, if you’re a horror movies traditionalist. This slasher comedy is truly a ton of fun.

7. Dark Shadows (2012)

Dark Shadows is a vampire movie I’d equate to being Tim Burton’s take on Count Dracula. Starring Johnny Depp, the film is based on a gothic soap opera from the 60s and 70s.

It follows Barnabas Collins, a vampire who is released from his coffin after being trapped for 200 years. It’s a bit of an odd movie and hasn’t received quite the fan fare of Burton’s other flicks, but it’s a lot of fun. If you like his other films, are looking for movies like Day Shift, or just simply enjoy vampire movies in general, then I think you’ll enjoy it.

8. Ready or Not (2019)

Ready or Not falls a little more into the are of traditional horror movies, but it’s got a comedy flare to it. After getting hitched, a woman must take part in a deadly game of hide and seek in order to survive the night.

It’s a great blend of horror and comedy, featuring an eccentric rich family that gives you a real WTF vibe. If you’re looking for a horror movie with some laughs, Ready or Not is definitely one to consider.

9. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

If you’re looking for an action comedy horror that mixes historical drama with action sequences and zombies, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is for you.

Based on the book of the same name, it’s the story of – you guessed it – Abraham Lincoln as he takes on a secret mission to kill vampires. The movie is a bit campy, but it’s a lot of fun. And if you’re a fan of Abraham Lincoln or vampire action movies, it’s definitely worth a watch.

What is Day Shift?

Day Shift is a hilarious action comedy film about Bud (Jamie Foxx) who’s San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is actually a front to cover up his true vampire slayer identity. It also stars Dave Franco as Seth from the vampire hunter’s union, and Snoop Dogg as Big John, a hella famous and respected slayer.

The Day Shift film is like the adult version of Buffy Vampire Hunter. Or, if you want something more action-oriented and less teen drama, the John Wick of vampire hunting. I truly wasn’t expecting to enjoy this film, but it quickly became one of my favorites of this Halloween season.

If you like any of the other movies like Day Shift on this list and haven’t had a chance to watch this one, then I’m sure you’ll thoroughly enjoy it. You can find it exclusively on Netflix, so you will have to be a subscriber to watch.
