17 Movies Like Hush | The Monster Series

Looking for a creepy psychological thriller to keep you up at night — er, I mean, to watch this movie night?

Hush was a fairly terrifying flick for those of us that spend a lot of time alone and live in somewhat-remote areas. If you’re a fan of that kind of thrill, you’ll probably enjoy these 17 movies like Hush that will freak you out.

From isolated locations to the unique use of sound (or lack there of), these films will keep your blood pumping… until your heart stops.

What is Hush?

Hush (2016) is an American psychological thriller starring Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House) directed by Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass).

It follows a deaf and mute writer, Maddie, who has moved to the middle of nowhere to work on her next masterpiece after the publication of her novel Midnight Mass. Not a tidbit relevant to the movie itself, but is the name of the most recent Netflix horror show directed by Flanagan and starring Siegel.

When Maddie catches the eye of a masked killer who’s lurking around the woods, she’s forced to “fight for her life in silence.” It’s a real cat-and-mouse game that’s more of an edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller with a few jump-scares thrown in here and there.

If you’re the kind of person who spends a lot of time alone in rural areas (guilty) this is a particularly terrifying flick. This movie is distributed by Netflix, so that’s where you’ll find it if you want to take a gander.

Editor’s pick: The Strangers (2008)

The Strangers is a lights on kind of movie for me. Better yet, a middle-of-the-day with the blinds open flick. Considering the similar bad guy outside of the house motif, Hush gave me a serious The Strangers vibe. So, if you’re into it, I think you’ll love this Liv Tyler (9-1-1: Lone Star) horror flick.

It’s is a suspenseful thriller that will keep your stomach in knots from beginning to end — at least it does for me. Kristen (Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) are looking for a peaceful weekend at a remote family home when they’re targeted by masked strangers who invade the home and terrorize them.

They’ve got no way to talk to the outside world, so the pair are forced to defend themselves. But, will they last the night? You’ll have to watch and find out!

2. Vacancy (2007)

When David (Luke Wilson) and Amy’s (Kate Beckinsale) car breaks down, they have little choice but to spend the night at a remote hotel.

The hotel is eerie and run-down, and it doesn’t take long for the couple to realize that they’re not alone. There’s something strange going on, and they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives.

Vacancy is one of the best movies like Hush I can think about. It’s a clear suspense-thriller, and it’s one of my favorites.

If you regularly stay in cheap motels and are really freaked out by Psycho, you might want to avoid this one. But if you want a good scare, this is the movie for you.

3. When a Stranger Calls (2006)

In When a Stranger Calls, a teenager named Jill Johnson (Camilla Belle) is hired to babysit in a luxurious home. However, soon after she arrives, she starts receiving threatening phone calls from a stranger.

The caller toys with Jill, taunting her and making her increasingly scared for the safety of the children she’s watching. As the calls become more and more frightening, Jill realizes that she’s in danger, and she must find a way to protect the children and herself.

Both When a Stranger Calls and Hush have the same the-killer-is-outside premise that will keep you on the edge of your seat. However, the former features a babysitter who doesn’t know if she’s in a horror scenario… yet.

To make things slightly creepier, the premise of When a Stranger calls is loosely based on a true story. It has some similarities (though, admittedly few) to the 1950 murder of 13-year-old Jannet Christman.

4. A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place is another one of the great great horror movies like Hush that shows the power and terror in silence. This 2018, film follows a family that must live in silence to avoid mysterious creatures that hunt by sound.

Knowing that even the slightest whisper or footstep can bring death, Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and Lee (James Krasinski) are determined to find a way to protect their children while desperately searching for a way to fight back.

It’s a suspenseful movie that will have you holding your breath the whole way through. The family’s struggle to survive is both heartbreaking and hopeful, and the film’s unique take on the horror genre is sure to leave you thinking long after the credits roll.

5. The Invisible Man (2020)

In this new take on the classic H.G. Wells story, a scientist named Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) has discovered a way to become invisible. He fakes his death and uses his power to stalk and terrorize his ex-girlfriend, Cecelia (Elizabeth Moss).

Unsurprisingly, the police refuse to believe her story — though, to be fair, invisible man is kind of a hard one to buy. So Cecelia is forced to take matters into her own hands and fight back.

The Invisible Man is a suspenseful and scary movie that will make you thankful your unsettled ex isn’t a rich scientist that likes to play with invisibility. You also might not be able to sleep after.

6. Gerald’s Game (2017)

Stephen King is the master of horror, and Gerald’s Game is no exception. Based on the 1992 novel of the same name, the film follows a couple, Jessie (Carla Gugino) and Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) who head to a remote area to rekindle their relationship.

In the middle of a sexy game that sees Jessie handcuffed to the bed she accidentally kills her husband. Unable to free herself, she soon becomes delirious.

Gerald’s Game is one of those film that makes you truly wonder what you would do if you were in the same situation. You’ll probably also give up any handcuff fantasy you might secretly harbor.

7. The Lodge (2019)

I first watched The Lodge at the 2019 Calgary International Film Festival, and I admit I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into. It follows the story of a soon-to-be stepmom, Grace (Riley Keough), is snowed in with her fiancé’s two children (Jaeden Martell and Lia McHugh) at a remote holiday village.

The trio aren’t exactly BFFs, but as things between them begin to thaw, strange things start to happen. Grace, who was the sole survivor of an extremist cult, starts to get flashbacks, things start to disappear, and she looses sense of reality.

This is a truly chilling film that does a fairly bad job at representing mental health topics like anxiety and prescription treatments — says someone who takes some fairly strong medication for anxiety and related illness.

Poor topic choice aside, this is one of the most terrifying movies like Hush I’ve seen, particularly if you’re someone who can relate on a very deep level with the main character. If that’s not something you can handle, don’t watch the film — it has lukewarm reviews and I can say with confidence, you’re not going to miss much!
